One Morning Left (04/2011)

One Morning Left – one of the Finnish pioneers carrying forward Screamo/Post Hardcore sound combined with electro elements – has been dividing the scene ever since the release of their first EP in the late 2008. You either love them, or hate them. Despite of not releasing hardly any new material during the years 2009-2010, the band has grown into international circles and already toured around Europe. Finally they are on the verge of releasing their debut album, and yes – on Spinefarm Records. Guess it is ok to say that these guys are here to stay, and so is their sound. Bassist Tuomas Teittinen gave us some insights. Eyes on the horizon!

How would you describe yourselves in a few sentences? Who is One Morning Left, what should people know about you?

One Morning Left is a Finnish electro/post-hardcore/metal band from different parts of Finland consisting of Mika Lahti (vocals), Ari Levola (lead guitar), Veli-Matti Kananen (keyboards), Tomi Salonen (drums, vocals) and Tuomas Teittinen (bass). We don’t give a shit about scene or style, we focus on making and playing good songs.

How did you end up as a band with your current line-up?

I think it just happened piece by piece. The former members had different plans and only Mika and Tomi are basically "original" members. I joined the band last year, just before  the tour with Adept and Ari joined the band about a month earlier than me. Now we have a line-up that shares the same passion for this band and because we all have completely different taste of music, we get to create really epic songs.

You just inked a deal with Spinefarm Records, which is rather known for its “pure Metal” signings. How did you wind up at Spinefarm and how does it feel to be their first artist being slightly different from their usual agenda?

We felt that this is the right way for us. It feels good to be their first band, which is not part of their typical Metal scope.

One Morning Left sort of appeared out of nowhere last year and immediately received broader attention worldwide. Did this happen naturally as the next step within the swing of things, or did you calculate your doings somehow (by having some kind of master plan e.g.)?

Of course we have some "plans", and we are very excited how our fanbase grows. Social networks, mostly Facebook, help us a lot, because we have the opportunity to chat with our fans.

Your debut album is due this fall. Can you already tell what it will be like? Will there be any major changes compared to “Panda Hearts Penguins”?

It's going to be more epic, and heavier. The major reason for the change is because of the new line-up.

How do you come up with your song idea and especially the names?

Whatever sounds good to us, and makes ear orgasms or people laugh, is good enough for us.

What are One Morning Left’s influences in music and in general, what are you guys doing besides being musicians?

Either we are unemployed, students or working class heroes.

You are quite un-Finnish if one can say so. You come across nicely wacko and unconventional, if not even eccentric, which might scare your home audience a bit. Do you think that’s the reason for your success? You must be perceived differently by the Finnish media than e.g. in the North-American scene… Do you generally feel accepted in the Finnish music scene?

I guess we don't want to sound like a typical Finnish band. But we don't want to be a copy of an American band either. I think the reason for our success is that we simply sound different.

You appear to be friends with We Butter The Bread With Butter from Germany. Could we ever expect a split-album?

Never say never!

What’s still up for One Morning Left in 2011?

We have a single and music video coming out soon. The debut album will becalled ”The Bree-Teenz"  and it will be out in fall 2011.
