Insiders and trendsetters can smell fire from miles away. Normal folks usually grasp it when the bomb is almost about to explode, with a little help from the media, a nice label-initiated hype, well, you know the drill. In the case of Sinking Charlie we do have one of the above mentioned phenomena – a new band about to blow up. But, do they deserve the excitement?

When opener "Siamese Amazement" of three-track EP "Shelters" blasts from the boxes, the first automatic reaction would be "oh, another Groove Metal / Metalcore band". Nothing new, nothing bad either. Until, well until the clean vocals steal your last sane straw of belief. This is nothing we have heard before, not this way. Henri Piispanen's voice is definitely on the "hate it or love it" fence, I count myself to the latter. Here we have found ourselves the Finnish answer to Coheed & Cambria's Claudio Sanchez. He is so annoyingly good in a very annoyingly catchy way, that it almost overshadows the growl parts. But only almost, as further spinning improves the overall performance and it is realized that they smoothly round out Sinking Charlie with their Groove and "controlled aggression", which makes "Shelter" the perfect combo of "in your face" and "in your ears".

Sinking Charlie did benefit from the line-up changes during the past few months. All one can do is spin, spin, spin it again. After the third round I'm myself totally hocked, and I expect that for fans of Metalcore and Groove Metal as well. Others shouldn't be too reserved due to the band's young age and the recent Electro trend in the genre, this is wacko-free, which is another advantage. We got some very skilled guys here, who know very well, where they are heading (see concluding song "Nap Stitches" with its hymnic vibe).

This is definitely the best Metalcore monster I have heard in Finland since Circle of Contempt. Now it's up to them to make this work on a full-length, to finally shake peoples' minds and make it big. If this doesn't work, then I officially bury my head in the sand.
