Almost when I was about to bury myself six feet under the muddy snow in this goddamn fancy-pancy-never-sad-always-cheery town (Munich) I am saved by an ever-changing view. In the strict sense of the word. "The Everchanging View" by Finnish-German friendship combo Scarlet Youth comes at the right time and makes Prozac and friends needless.
Oh, has the sound of agonizing delight and bittersweet melancholy ever been so tender? Has it ever been so danceable? I'm sure it has, especially "The Everchanging View" being closely held to 80s heroes as The Cure and Co. Personally I might have been a tad too young for being a reliable fan of this era with my interest not reaching beyond The Cure, yet Scarlet Youth's second album is able to drag me into a time I now badly wish to have witnessed myself in person by being slightly psychedelic and hypocritically innocent with the hidden beauty of inspiring gloominess. Again, with this Shoegaz-ish release Scarlet Youth have done themselves a favor. Especially "This night is ours" could be played on European radios easily, warming both our mothers' and little sisters' hearts.
Reminding of carefree summers when we were young, naive and full of hope, dreams and expectations "The Everchanging View" is a solid second album, the only minus would be that after many spins no song is distinguishable, it rather becomes one big sound mesh.
Cruelly embracing the warmth of long-gone summer nights ("Warm lucid nights"), this album is the perfect bridging till the days will finally become longer again. Until then, we "Cool kids" dance the night away to this carefree-sounding, yet carefully fragile piece of joyful sadness.
8 / 10
