My first real change of heart happened after I met him. Back then I was around 20 and one could have easily called me naive, good-natured and a lil crazy. Who else would fall in love with someone, get her heart broken and then sob for months to the music of the band of the guy who caused everything? Almost five years later I’m wiser of course, yet again my very own iconcrash pt. 2 knocked on my door…
A couple of days ago the unbelievable happened: I decided to make over my Caliban hoodie to my teen cousin who is suddenly into bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Co. That was just the climax of many weeks of shifting my old band shirts from one pile to another. To go or not go. To wear or not to wear. Be cool or be… OLD?!
For many the burial of Sentenced -one of the greatest Finnish bands of our time- marked an ending. Not meaning that the Northernmost Killers decided to leave on a high note, but that it genre and music-wise left quite a void for the years to come. All crying and mourning doesn’t help – that’s it and no can do one might believe, as life goes on so does the engine that constantly let’s promising Finnish bands pop out from the swamp. Still it feels that the memento of Sentenced not only influences but also overshadows the current music scene. Latest example is Century Media Records’ marvelous creating of the “Suomi Metal Star” competition.
When Tuomas Holopainen started to dream his future career he by no means had been aware of what bulk he was to create. And I’m not talking about Nightwish here. Could he possibly have known that one day his beloved and pampered muse would spread her wings and reach towards the sun (the renowned tale, eh)? Done were the days of "no man gets left behind", which had too soon turned into a show by Snow White and her tiny fellows.
As the year changes and the first hangover fades, the gig season is keeping a low profile and some bands have to digest "worst album, worst outfit, worst cover" rankings, it gives us some time for the obligatory New Year’s checklist. Every December, before the calendar strikes 31 and marks for some the party of the year, we're forced (or force ourselves) to have a reasonable look back on what we have and rather haven't accomplished and most importantly want to change about ourselves and the way we behave. If those annual DO's & DON'Ts lists actually do us any good and help us accomplish something is questionable, but surely not misplaced.
